Several western Lake County communities are preparing to apply to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to receive an allocation of Lake Michigan water. Hearings for the applications will begin early in 2010.
The project would pump Lake Michigan water from a shoreline site in Zion through a 57-mile pipeline to serve Antioch, Fox Lake, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst, Wauconda, Long Grove, Lake Zurich, Volo and the Lake County Public Water District on behalf of Grandwood Park and the northwest region near Fox Lake. If approved, the project, estimated to cost $180 million, could be a reality within five years.
